Volunteer Writer (US & Canada)

Location: United States or Canada (remote)

Commitment: Voluntary, flexible

Start: Rolling

Scene is seeking volunteer writers based in the United States or Canada to help expand our international coverage across culture, politics, community life, news and opinion.

Established in 1993, Scene has been a consistent voice in LGBTQ+ media for over three decades. As our readership continues to grow internationally, we’re keen to work with writers who can bring insight into North American LGBTQ+ experiences, political developments and cultural conversations — from federal politics and grassroots organising to arts, media and identity.

What you’ll be doing

  • Writing original articles, opinion pieces or features for Scene
  • Covering US- or Canada-focused stories across politics, culture, community and current affairs
  • Pitching timely ideas and responding to major news moments
  • Collaborating remotely with our editorial team

We’re looking for

  • Clear, compelling writing and an interest in storytelling
  • Knowledge of the political, cultural or social landscape in the US or Canada
  • An interest in LGBTQ+ issues, communities and media
  • The ability to work independently and meet agreed deadlines
  • Previous writing or journalism experience is helpful but not required

What you’ll get

  • Published work with a long-running international LGBTQ+ outlet
  • Editorial guidance and constructive feedback
  • Portfolio and byline development
  • A flexible, remote role with creative freedom

To apply, please share a short introduction, your areas of interest, and any relevant writing samples or links.
