News Journalist

This role offers a clear pathway to part-time or full-time paid employment. We actively recruit news journalists from our volunteer contributor pool.

Location  United Kingdom (remote)

Commitment  Voluntary, flexible

Scene is looking for a volunteer news journalist to join our UK news desk, contributing original reporting across the stories that matter to LGBTQ+ communities and beyond.

This is a genuine entry point into journalism at Scene. We are committed to offering a clear pathway to part-time or full-time paid employment for the right candidate, and we actively recruit from our pool of volunteer contributors when news desk positions become available.

What you'll be doing

  • Covering breaking news, developing stories and ongoing issues relevant to LGBTQ+ life in the UK, the US and around the world.
  • Monitoring the news cycle and responding with timely, accurate reporting
  • Pitching and developing original stories in collaboration with our editorial team
  • Working to publication deadlines and Scene's editorial standards
  • Writing across formats including news reports, short features and news analysis

We're looking for

  • A strong news instinct and a clear, precise writing style
  • An interest in — or experience of — journalism, with a particular focus on news rather than features or opinion
  • A solid understanding of the UK news landscape and its intersection with LGBTQ+ issues
  • The ability to work independently, reliably and at pace when the news cycle demands it
  • Previous experience in journalism, media or community reporting is welcome, but not essential — we're happy to support emerging journalists

What you'll get

  • A published byline and a strong portfolio of news journalism
  • Hands-on editorial support, feedback and development
  • A genuine pathway to paid part-time or full-time employment as a news journalist at Scene
  • The chance to contribute to an established, independent LGBTQ+ publication
  • A flexible, remote role that fits around existing commitments

How to apply

Send a short introduction, a brief note on what draws you to news journalism and the kinds of stories you'd want to cover, and any relevant writing samples or published work.
